I’m a Creative Director who specializes in photography, video, graphic design, and fashion editorial.
I’m currently a Creative Director of Photography, Motion/Video, and Illustration for Apple, Inc. I manage the teams that work across APAC &#38;amp; EMEA for Services.


This site contains selections from my time as Creative Director of&#38;nbsp;Vogue China in Beijing and Shanghai, Art Director at NYLON magazine in New York, and Love magazine in London.


I’ve worked for a lot of other publications in the past 20+ years, including&#38;nbsp;Vogue (US), Entertainment Weekly,&#38;nbsp;The New York Times Sunday magazine, Esquire, Vice, Details, and many others.


The projects that I’ve contributed to have won awards from the Society of Publication Designers and American Society of Magazine Editors. For my work in both design and music, I’ve been featured by the&#38;nbsp;Village Voice (NYC), Computer Arts Projects (UK), New York Post,&#38;nbsp;Time Out (China), and Two Magazine (Thailand). 


In addition, I was invited as a guest speaker in both Oslo and Copenhagen for the Danish School of Media and Journalism’s Magazine Design Conference in 2010, and as a guest speaker and lecturer for Seoul Design Week in 2017. 


Born in Los Angeles, I have since spent time living and working in San Francisco, New York, London, Bangkok, Shanghai and Beijing. I currently reside in Taipei.

This Vogue cover (below) is one of my favorites. It was for our “China” issue - so I wanted to emphasize certain themes that symbolically represent Chinese culture. For example, I chose red as the primary color for it’s association with historic China. And for props, I selected paper umbrellas (red, of course) that are instantly identified as a Chinese icon. I sketched out this idea for the cover and discussed it with contributing photographer Chen Man. She liked it as well; this final shot is almost exactly the same as what my sketch envisioned. I love the little details we put in - her hair has a ‘wet look’, to go with the thematic idea of umbrellas and rain.

For this shoot with photographer Ben Weller, we really wanted to convey the fashion theme of ‘color blocking’. I worked with stylist Cheryl Leung to decide on the colors we wanted for the clothes, and based on that, I built a set using giant, colored wooden boards and cubes, using color tones that would compliment the clothing.

This next shoot featured expensive couture fashion, so I wanted to convey a romantic warmth. I took Rothko and his color fields as the main reference. Photographer Trunk Xu was able to evoke these Rothko-esque moods with his smart use of color gels.

Louis Vuitton lent us their $8 million vintage train to use as a prop for an LV-themed shoot. I worked with photographer Stockton Johnson to come up with period-accurate vintage props such as old birdcages and trolleys, and set about developing the narrative of a group of friends aboard the Orient Express. (Fun fact: birds in birdcages do not respond well to art direction.) We only had three hours to shoot this entire story, but our end result was successful because everybody on the team knew exactly what their roles would be - due to careful planning.

Photographer Zack Zhang and I were tasked with doing a shoot in a large exhibition space designed by Dior mastermind Alexandre de Betak. Alex had designed an elaborate space for our Vogue China 10th anniversary exhibition, showcasing hundreds of archive images and videos from Vogue throughout the years. For our shoot, we wanted to integrate his visuals into our shoot while still making it our own, so we decided to focus on using video backgrounds as an artistic backdrop for our model. We timed our shots with the background video - tight shots of model faces and fluorescent lights - to turn the location into an abstract fantasy setting.

This was another collaboration between me and photographer Zack Zhang. The fashion theme was bold color patterns, so we constructed a set using graphic shapes that I designed. Stylist Candy Lee and I then chose the best clothes to put over these backdrops. In some cases, we matched the colors and shapes; for others, we chose contrasting ones.

Vogue China did a special issue on the city of Chengdu recently. Chengdu is a central Chinese city that’s been experiencing an economic and creative boom in the last couple of years, and we focused on that with a shoot in Chengdu that takes the things that it’s known for: spicy “Sichuan” noodles and chili peppers, tea houses, historic architecture, and Sichuan masked opera theatre - and integrated them into our story visuals.&#38;nbsp;
Each shot in this narrative features something that is uniquely Chengdu. That last shot with the masked opera actor? The theatre company gave us one minute (literally) to shoot that before the actors had to go on stage. Photographer Yin Chao managed three quick snaps, and luckily one of them worked!

One of my biggest design challenges working at Vogue China was that every story needed both an English and Chinese headline. Figuring out how to balance the typography for both languages on covers and layout openers was a delicate balancing act. Not only do you have to use the right blend of fonts in one language - now you have to consider how to merge fonts from two different languages that have no linguistic nor visual traits in common.

The following spreads are layout openers to fashion stories. In general, I played with the idea of using typography to mirror the image - if the model was in an action pose, the typography followed suit. If the model was sitting, the typography was designed in a way to echo that same pose. Every month I coordinated with our world class photographers such as Peter Lindbergh, Dan Jackson, or Sharif Hamza to get the best pairing of image and typography.

This was a “Top Ten Fashion Trends” story where each trend got a separate page. These types of stories can become boring for readers who are used to seeing them time and time again in magazines. So, for our feature, I wanted it to be as visually fun as possible - using big numbers to create a sense of positive and negative space.

Vogue’s Fashion’s Night Out was a yearly global event initiative that Vogue started from New York, and was so successful that it eventually spread to Vogue editions all over the world. For the China edition, I was tasked with creating a unique logo that we could utilize concurrently with the standard Fashion’s Night Out typeface. 
I designed a handwritten “FNO” visual mark that could then be used on various platforms - print, digital, as well as in both interior and exterior environments around China. We have since used it every year on buses, on billboards, and in neon lights for store displays. It was so successful that other Vogue editions - such as Vogue Spain - have since adopted it’s usage as well. Later on, I also created an “FNI” logo for our Fashion’s Night In (FNI) digital event, an event which promotes online sales - as opposed to physical sales with FNO.

I am a Contributing Creative Director for Modern Weekly, which has been called the “NYTimes of China” and has a reputation for championing avant-garde and challenging ideas. This first issue I did for them was based on the issue-wide editorial theme of “objects in a collection”. With this theme in mind, for the typography I made each letter into a different font, but one that melds cohesively with other letters to form a unique headline, the same way different objects would merge together into a unified collection.


The rest of the layouts shown here are from their Bridal issue, Beauty issue, and Fashion issue. For each one, I created a new visual identity to go along with the respective theme.

As an Art Director for NYLON magazine, one of my tasks was to oversee&#38;nbsp;NYLON Guys -&#38;nbsp;the men’s magazine counterpart to the female-centric flagship&#38;nbsp;NYLON title. I was given a lot of creative freedom by founder Marvin Scott Jarrett to really push the design and typography style of this magazine. I focused on using a lot of handmade elements - for example, on one layout I created and cut out a stencil, and then spray painted letters making the headline “Order of the Phoenix”. For others, I used a lot of found type and scanned them in, rearranging existing typography to form something new.


Along with photo director Stephen Walker, we created a photographic style that felt energetic and bright, and we closely directed top photographers - such as Kenneth Cappello and Valerie Phillips - to make sure they conveyed the vitality we wanted.

Ever since it was founded in 1999, NYLON has been at the vanguard of cool design and photography. First in 2006 under Art Directors Andrea Fella &#38;amp; Michele Outland, and then again in 2009, when I was the Co-Art Director with Michael Pangilinan, we were all excited at the prospect of guiding the look of this storied publication. We took the already adventurous DNA of NYLON and gave it a makeover, focusing on creative typography and energetic photography that helped introduce the magazine to a new generation of readers. 
For stories such as “Fast Future Generation”, I had to juggle back-to-back photoshoots of 40 new and rising stars spread among London, New York, and LA, shooting each in a unique way while still keeping them cohesive as one story. This shoot included young stars who would go on to become major players - such as Ezra Miller (The Flash in&#38;nbsp;Batman vs. Superman) and Ellie Kendrick from Game of Thrones.

When I moved to London in 2007, I had the honor of working with Suburbia Media (Lee Swillingham and Stuart Spalding) as their in-house Art Director. I worked with them on projects such as Karen Millen, Tod’s, and Girls Aloud. The most exciting project, however, was the art direction of Pop magazine. Later, when the editor of Pop - Katie Grand - moved to Conde Nast, we also did the art direction for her new magazine, titled&#38;nbsp;Love. My role at Pop and Love was to oversee design and typography. Since we changed the design style of the magazine with every issue, it gave me the freedom to constantly try a lot of interesting new visual ideas.

Huawei is the leader of mobile phones in China. Their products are smartly designed and cater well to the Chinese market. When they recently unveiled their new stylish red and blue P9 phones, they asked Vogue to do an advertorial featuring creative use of their new phones. As the Creative Director, I decided to do a shoot that accentuated the phone’s color scheme of red and blue. The shoot was a mix of fashion and still-life that involved two photographers over two cities (Stockton Johnson in Shanghai for fashion, and Dennis Yong in Hong Kong for still-life) that I had to coordinate in order to produce a shoot that tied everything together cohesively. 


I created abstract geometric elements in both the fashion and still life shoots that would sit well side-by-side in a layout, and stylist Grace Lam and I carefully chose the styling so that the colors and visuals would offer a unified message despite being two separate shoots. Choosing model poses was tricky - the model must display the phone, but it has to feel like a natural pose. The image with the male model leaning was the most difficult one to capture…he literally had to fall down with each snap of the camera - though of course we had a mattress that would catch him each time!

Huawei was so happy with our shoot that they commissioned an extra image (below), which they used as their official campaign image for the red and blue P9 series. This image was used on billboards and various media in both the Chinese and international markets. My inspiration for this image came from a classic Patrick Demarchelier American Vogue shot of the model Caroline Trentini jumping along with a cameraman. In our image, however, I turned the male model upside down to give it a yin-yang motif: the idea that the two phones combine to make a complete set.
